There was more drama in Boston last night. A day after Adam Jones endured racist comments from fans, Manny Machado endured a Chris Sale missile. The fastball thrown by the Sox ace didn't hit Machado, but it did escalate tensions in an already simmering relationship between the two teams. Peruse social media and you'll find a number of opinions on what's gone down over the last week. My personal take for the players and mangers involved: don't resort to sorting this mess out with 100-mph beanballs and expletive-ridden tirades to the press. Talk to one another, end the drama, and get back to playing baseball.
Aaron Judge and Antonio Senzatela were named rookies of the month by MLB earlier today. Everyone is talking about Judge, but Senzatela has flown under the radar. The 22-year-old Rockies starting pitcher has a 2.81 ERA in 32 IP, relying heavily on a 95-mph four-seam fastball. His peripheral numbers (4.50 xFIP) suggest he might have been lucky, but any time a Rockies pitcher wins an award it's reason to celebrate.
The amateur draft is getting closer and closer (June 12). White Sox director of scouting Nick Hostetler had some really interesting things to say to The Athletic's—and former podcast guest—James Fegan about this year's talent pool:
"There’s a little bit of everything, a little bit of high school pitching, little bit of high school bats, a little bit of college pitching, a little bit of college bats. There’s not a really full on strength of one side to the other and I think that’s what makes it so weird. It is definitely a different type of year this year with this draft than I’ve really witnessed and really one of the more difficult years that I’ve been a part of in the last 10-to-12 years."
