Daily Triple: April 26, 2017

April 26, 2017 Paul Elliott

As less and less people buy into cable packages, layoffs at ESPN seemed inevitable. But I don't think anyone saw today coming. Among the 100 staffers let go was the venerable Jayson Stark. He'll never read this, but we wish Jayson well on his next chapter; we'll continue reading his work no matter where he lands.

Even as sports like football and basketball have joined the analytics revolution in recent years, I still have the sense that baseball is the thinking —and woman's—game. The strategy, the writing, and the pace of play seem to appeal to a more intellectual audience. In a small way, the New Yorker's cover art this week seems to validate my thinking.

In case you missed it, the Nationals Trea Turner hit for the cycle last night in Colorado. The cycle is an impressive feat, but it turns out doing it at Coors helps quite a bit.

Since Coors Field opened in 1995, 16 of the 83 cycles in @MLB have occurred at the @Rockies’ home park. https://t.co/ORnOh2CRns
