I’ll admit, watching highlights of Chris Sale’s first start for the Red Sox last night was hard for me. In today’s day and age, though, how many fans truly get to root for a guy from major league debut through retirement? There are a few examples—Derek Jeter, Mariano River, Chipper Jones, Todd Helton, and now likely Yadier Molina—but it’s become pretty rare for teams to spend big on aging superstars. Cubs fans, how many guys from the young core (Bryant, Rizzo, Russell, Baez, Schwarber) do you expect to be around in 10 years?
Angels SP Garrett Richards left last night’s game in the 5th inning with apparent soreness in his right arm. Certainly a discouraging moment for Angels fans and Richards, who was pitching in his first regular season game since tearing his Ulnar Collateral Ligament (UCL) in 2016. Unlike many pitchers that deal with UCL damage, Richards chose against Tommy John surgery and opted instead for a stem cell therapy to encourage healing. Here’s hoping it’s just a cramp.
